Malaysian singer/songwriter Zee Avi has one-upped herself in the internet realm. She is currently one of the featured artists (along with The Cool Kids, Lil Jon and Daz Gibran) on MySpace Music, where her self-titled debut album is being premiered (before its official release on 19 May). Previously, her video 'No Christmas For Me' was featured on YouTube's main page.
As if that's not enough, her song 'Monte' was used in the season finale for TV series Private Practice that aired last weekend in the US. And to top it off, Zee Avi also released her first official music video for the song 'Bitter Heart', directed by none other than The Malloys–in case you've been living under a rock, they have done videos for The Kooks, Jack Johnson, the White Stripes, Blink-182 and heaps more. If you want to be in the loop for all things Zee Avi, follow her on Twitter and add her up on MySpace.

Also take a look at the JunkTV interview we did with Zee Avi back in 2008 (ahhh the memories):
SokMaria, she’s not so original & creative? Who are you to judge this girl? You should ask Kris Rowley a UK singer/songwriter, Ian Montone, drummer’s Patrick Keeler, and Robert Carranza of Brushfire why they have chosen this girl to release her music. One for sure, it is because of her originality and uniqueness. And you are just jealous of her being a lucky girl.
this is someone we all can be very proud of. i am, for sure. it's quite a shame bcos we have talented singers, but they are not given enough space in our little music industry. the malay mainstream media don't give a damn for these people. they should be promoting them, instead of spreading gossips and instigating hatred. thanks to zee avi and a host of other talents, i still believe in the local music scene.

A talent like miss zee avi here should be recognize countrywide. Our ignorance to acknowledged anything else besides the mainstream media surely cost us dearly. Really talented people are often suppressed by the general public due to their lack of tolerance in the genre of music. We're not yet ready to have a mindset of accepting music from diverse backgrounds and genres.
Anyway it's a good thing though that she was picked up by a US label since it'll give her a wider perspective on music and life in whole. I wish her success and she'll be a face that Malaysia could be proud of. That is if, us Malaysians were even aware that she's existed.
i see msians only know how to despise their own talented ones, making fun of them be cynical but not always proud of them unlike in america!no wonder she was discovered by them not us!!msian music industry only recognises talent they like and one they consider a package!!!!like datuk ct??i heard and read msian artists wanting to go international but still never set their foot outside msian soil!!msian media can be destructive at times with whom they think is not up to their so called standards!!!
her vdo clip doesnt do her justice. it came across as a try-hard failure but the guest appearance by matt costa really saved it from being the more horrible than it already is.
i like her .... nvr hate her. :)
*alamak grammar aku tunggang langgang. korang sendiri editlah. dun have time to reread before posting.
chiao!
shes wrote her own stuff inclined towards her musical influences..(and so did other musicians).so what do you mean by not being original?
give us one name of original musician and im sure all of us here can related their sounds with other earlier musicians.
shes nothing like lily allen. just listen to her stuff n judge it urself.
a hater will do nothing but hate. simple as dat. not everyone dig ur musical preference. what appeals to you may not appeal to everyone else.
but if you want to go on, spending your times giving comments on things that you dont like or love to hate then pls continue, whatever that makes u happy.
hehehe.
haih, i think the reason why brushfire picked her up first becoz they are fast, and zee herself prefer to be associated with brushfire, coz it suit her music and probably she prefered their offer.
Cannot blame the local label for being slow either becoz she is still very very new in a local scene with just few series in local gigs around kl. itu pun lepas her youtube thing explode on the net upon accident.
its all happened by accident and quick luck.
btw, there are more local talents bubbling their way up in the international scenes, and zee definately is not alone.
hehehehhheee...support our local act(the great, good quality one dat is).
can't wait to see her in pittsburgh!
din : mcm mana label malaysia boleh terlepas talent ni.
abu: tu la pasal kan? confirm malaysian labels out of date and stupid gila. obsess sgt dgn AF dan Mentor dan stupid reality shows yang tak ke mana.
din: aku rasa mcm nak give up je citizenship aku. dah la music diambil ringan. gomen pun f'd up. confirm ramai lagi mcm zee avi dkt msia ni.
abu: oh well, better for her to be signed to a US label kan?
din: kan.
