Jin Hackman
Jinius At Work
(Independent)
If, by some spectacular execution of mind over matter, you are able to look beyond the atrocious pun in Malaysian rapper Jin Hackman’s name and that of his debut album, you will discover a refreshing local debut by a gifted 20-year-old with an uncanny knack for dissecting his cultural surroundings with snigger-ific precision. ‘Heezy Rock’ is a magnificent ode to local indie rock while ‘The All-Star Cypher’ and its raspy synths prop up some Cypress Hill-level wordplay. The turntable scratches can feel dated across an entire LP, but no one who jibes at Amber Chia’s English can be too shoddy.
