Behind the scenes at The Wongs photoshoot

They're one of the good guys. So shorn of pretence it's almost unnerving. That's why The Wongs were cool with making a trip down the heart of Kuala Lumpur, all the way from Perak for a shoot as Junk Lo-Fideo Cycle #2 champions (which you can check out in the next issue of Junk). They didn't know it at the time, of course; we're sneaky like that.

Since we didn't get to find out the reason they called themselves The Wongs - is it the surname of a girl? Their favourite restaurant? Dr. Strange's manservant? - we did the next best thing. We took them to the deliberately old-school Capital Café along Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman, which still boasts those sturdy as fuck wooden chairs and coffee in stained porcelain cups of yesteryear.

Yeah, the association is a bit simplistic, but The Wongs look at home here. Just as Capital Café may seem like a retro port in a modernist storm (KL as a whole, not Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman), The Wongs are mod revivalists in a day and age of nu-rave. They may sound more chirpy Britpop than the mod of old, but look closely at the pics below, and you'll see that even their belts are emblazoned with the British RAF logo. It makes for stark contrast in photos. Which would've been more stark if we'd gotten the man with the "Happy Hour" sign in the shot.
