The Music Conference Asia Digital Music Competition (MC Asia-DMC) has just wrapped. Aimed at discovering hidden talent all over Asia and Australasia, and spearheaded by Global Sound Masters with Holland’s In Charge Label, digital music enthusiasts were given the challenge to submit a remix or music video for ‘Spark’, the MC Asia theme song produced by Canada’s DJ Preach (featuring Matthew Ryan), online.
DJ Preach aka Phillipe Babin, who is one of the judges for the competition as well as the host of the MC Asia Music Factory workshop with Marcel Woods, believes that a music conference of this scale is what the region really needs. “Asian talents aren’t exposed to the rest of the world just yet. That’s why the Global Sound Master team and I want to focus on giving the opportunity to new producers and DJs to showcase their music to the world by learning the tricks of the trade. There are many talented ones out there and it’s a shame that they’ve never been to Europe to spin.”
The competition will play an important role in launching the career of the winners; besides a total of RM18,000 in cash and prizes, both the winning remix and music video will be released under In Charge Records and promoted worldwide. As a guest judge, DJ Preach will be looking for originality in each submission–among other significant factors. “The remix has to be a great dance floor track,” he explains. “It has to have an appeal to listeners, but I won’t cut off points if the sound quality isn’t good. I know that not all producers can afford an elaborate sound system.”
While the competition module aims to discover hidden DJ talent, the workshop equips aspiring DJs with the right knowledge to take their dance music career further. “The workshop will definitely inspire them. I’m going to talk about marketing strategies; what [the contestants] need to do to get their names out there, what it’s like being a DJ on the move and how to cope with it.”
Since all work and no play makes any deck dabbler dull, the conference ends with a big bang at the end of the day via the MC Asia Appreciation Night, with DJ Preach himself on decks. “My set is going to be quite technical as I’ll be using three decks. I will bring variety as I plan to mix it up.”
