Was it a case of too many DJs spoiling the broth? Certainly not. The same couldn't be said about the sound system though. We all do like our music turned up a notch to bob our heads too but we're not really deaf thank you.
Local indie favourites Twilight Action Girl started of the night at a little after 9pm though the response was drab to say the least. Apart from a very syok sendiri fan (though to his credit he managed to get a few of his chums to dance along), the crowd was generally unresponsive and pretty sparse still.
Agrikulture were up next. Combining live performance elements and DJ sets, they got the too-cool crowd flocking to the dance floor. Vocalist Fandy was vibrant and really interacted well with the crowd and emcee for the night Arabyrd got on stage and dropped a few bombs herself (all clad in tight leather pants and bird hairband on her head - comel).
GXXX featuring Goldfish took to stage next and the customary "Let me hear some f*cking noise KL!" was uttered before breaking into a crazy drum and DJ set to 'Warp' by The Bloody Beetroots and Steve Aoki (I swear I heard it in almost all the sets). They managed to get the crowd pumped and if all that was foreplay, sex was up next as 2manydjs were poised to perform.
Headlining the event, the Soulwax brothers infused a little bit of Malaysiana before opening their set by using a giant remote to blare out Malay broadcasts. Then it came. Their signature opening of 'Hey Boy, Hey Girl' meshed with 'Warp' (what did I tell you) got the supremely packed dancefloor into a frenzy. Dressed in suits and sipping champagne on the decks (how baller is that), they got us in a 'Warp', bobbed our heads to 'Bonkers', got us humming to 'Kids', got me agreeing about 'How I Like It' - basically playing all the tunes guaranteed to get the crowd moving and any self-respecting DJ would play. Tracks from Justice, Proxy, and crowd-pumper Zombie Nation all featured together with stunning backdrop visuals and motion graphics which accompanied every song. The climax was of epic proportions, with confetti falling and Nirvana to close their set. Eargasmic.
Barsonic icons LapSap ended the night though in my opinion, they never managed to quite capture the electricity 2manydjs generated (and I'm saying this even when I'm a huge fan of LapSap). They did well with the freebies they were throwing out, though at the end mainly their core followers were still up and about for their brand of indie electro mash-ups. And did I mention the beer had finished by this time. OMFG, horror.
So was it a good night? How's this for a barometer of fun times: my friend, who had been wanting to meet LMF member Sam Lee the whole night (even begged the bouncers to let him in to the VIP section but to no avail) finally got the chance down by the carpark. The following conversation ensued:
Drew( my friend) : "Heyyyy."
Sam (with his posse) : (No response)
Drew: "Oi LMF. Hum Ga Ling!" (nothing better than getting a Chinese boy's attention than an 'Oi' followed by hoping his whole family dies)
Sam : (In his coolest voice possible with requisite cock-stare goes) "You know what the f*ck I'm saying?" (and promptly shakes hands)
LOL. *sniggers* Well I guess if you can get Sam Lee - actor and rapper nonetheless - coming down to KL for the Green Room event and staying till the end, you know it was a party not to be missed.
Kudos Heineken!
