All the way from Manila, Philippines comes Drip, a four-piece trip hop outfit with a significant following in their home country. They released an independent EP in 2003 and their full-length album Far Side Of The World is out now as Terno Recording's third release. Their sound is simultaneously dark, experimental yet seductive and glamorous. Drip features Beng Calma-Alcazaren (vocals), Malek Lopez (live keyboards, sound design, programming), Caliph8 (turntables, FX) and Ian "Morse" Magbanua (beats, samples, programming).
Having made it to Bangkok, Thailand for the 2005 Heineken Music Thirst competition, the pioneering Altered Image have certainly come a long way. Their unique blend of live visuals and dance music has elevated the scene to a new level with innovative and boundary-pushing ideas. Representing two-thirds of Altered Image for this edition of Impulse is Callen (Excessive Records) and Terence (Zouk KL).
You may not have heard of M, but this new duo are set to make a name for themselves real soon. Though pretty well-known in their own individual right, Melina (frontwoman of modern rockers Tempered Mental) and Michelle (of acoustic indie act Milli’z) are exploring a new style of electronica, with ambient and melodic soundscapes to capture the senses. Keep an eye out for a release in end 2008.
The Hoo aka Danny Hoo has always been passionate about live visuals and has been involved in the scene since 2004. He’s worked on notable events such as the MVA Awards 2004, Nokia Creative Awards (Zouk, 2005), Push Vs. Trinity at (Zouk, 2005), Puteri Gunung Ledang Musical Theatre (KL and Singapore, 2008) and P Ramlee The Musical (KL and Singapore, 2008). His versatility and experience in everything from theatre and concerts to club gigs and installation-oriented shows should make his specially-created visuals for Impulse acts extra exciting.
Get yourselves there at 8.30pm, on the 22 of August, Heritage Mansion, 18-26 Jalan Kamunting, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Admission is free.
