Visual by The Hoo

Heineken Music presents Impulse: A Junk Music Project returns this month with its cutting edge sound and visual spectacular. Held quarterly, Impulse is a night that brings together some of the best audio and visual heroes in Malaysia and around the region for a collaborative experience that is both stimulating and exciting. We speak to two performers at Impulse: Melina William, one half of ambient electronic act M (with partner Michelle), and visual impresario The Hoo in anticipation of the gig.

THE HOO
What led you to become a visual artist?
When I saw the Underworld concert on DVD.

What are your three favourite music videos?
Chris Clark - ‘GobCoitus’ (directed by Lynn Fox), Justice - ‘Dance’, Szamar Madar - ‘Venetian Snares’.

Who is your muse?
Underworld.

What keeps you awake at night?
National Geographic and Discovery channel.

What can audiences expect from you at Impulse?
A simple yet intense performance.

M
How did M come about?
Michelle and I met in college and have played music together ever since. Both of us have different tastes in music and perform independently with other bands [Melina in Tempered Mental, Michelle in Mi’liz]; however, we have a mutual passion for electronic music and have always wanted to fuse our musical ideas, so M became a platform to experiment and perform our previously unheard electronic music.

What three "M"s can you not live without?
Music, money and mashed potatoes.

Who is your muse?
There are a lot! I couldn't possibly name one. If I had to choose, the top five would be Morcheeba, Sia, Imogen Heap, Zero 7 and Emiliana Torrini. Melina loves Bjork.

What keeps you awake at night?
The urge to write music keeps me awake occasionally. Sometimes I jump out of bed in the middle of the night because a melody pops into my head.

What can audiences expect from you at Impulse?
Audiences can expect an insight into our musical minds portraying a unique, inspirational and refreshing performance to satisfy their musical appetite. So sit back, drink, relax and enjoy our original sound.
