Last week, we wrote about a possible ban of Avril's show in KL; that got a lot of you worked up.

Yesterday The Malay Mail reported that as of now, the concert is off and sources from the Ministry of Culture, Arts and Heritage and City Hall will meet today to decide the fate of the concert. Read more about it here.

While we wait for the verdict, today's report in the national paper says that there's little hope for Avril's concert. We're just really puzzled about everything that's been happening. First the Pussycat Dolls get fined for indecent exposure during their concert here in 2006, then they are allowed to come back and perform at the MTV Asia Awards in Genting early this month. So why pick on someone as harmless as Avril?

Is it because of the so-called "punk" in her pop? Is it because the authorities think that the Malaysian youth will be exposed to unwanted influences at the concert? Is it because Malaysia's Independence Day should only be celebrated with songs by Siti?

You can read the full report in today's Malay Mail here, after 6pm.

UPDATE: The Unity, Culture, Arts and Heritage Ministry have spoken and cancelled the Avril show in Kuala Lumpur. They've said that the show's promoter Galaxy Group can request for a new date for the concert. So far, the organisers could not be reached for a comment.

UPDATE (21 Aug): The organisers are set to meet the Unity, Culture, Arts and Heritage Ministry today for an appeal, so we await the news. More from The Star.

That's weird..what harm could she do? her music already been here for years...youth today can differentiate what's good or bad for them...give her a space, shall we???

What's wrong with the world mama!!?? Wait. Correction. What's wrong with the freakin' government man. Gosh. Better get rid of those rempits than banning Avril la weih... That way, we'll have less accidents in this country.

I wouldnt mind it being banned since there's severe crime to music. But not suitable for Merdeka month? Then ban all those rave partys with some lousy DJs taking place on Merdeka eve. Tell me about it.

i think it's just sad that the govt is actually doing this. and i know that once they cancel this concert, the news will spread around the world on how 'unfriendly' Malaysia really are towards foreign acts. and it will look embarrasing. and i fear that it might scare off other acts to come and do live shows here as well. and that's why everyone else is running off to Singapore!!!
I'd say this is just stupid. Avril is absolutely innocent. if they say it is totally inappropriate for Merdeka month, then why dont we shut down the clubs and parties as well. those are even more inappropriate.
ahh.. the irony... talk about 'Merdeka' huh?

maybe those politician like to mabuk-mabuk rather than jumping to avril songs.

Find it ironic that it has been banned because it is not in the 'spirit' of our National Day. Didn't Singapore have SingFest in conjunction with their National Day? Odd....

If this is the case, we'll all be in Genting watching Lobo and MLTR every friggin year.

Verdict is out: The concert is canceled, and the organisers can request for a new date if they want to.

i think we better not suggest thy close the clubs and everythg else on Merdeka month, cause that might just happen... never know

this is seriously hilarious! LOLz

this is so stupid. fuck la the government. fuck pas! fuck politicians!
if they think avril is a bad influence, then what about the hardcore bands that perform here in malaysia. watafak man. they should just stick to their politics and sodomy cases. and sorry to say the youth in malaysia is already fucked up. so why cry over spilt milk? must i remind you of tiesto? everyone was wasted big time. so yeah! fuck the LAW!

MAKE A PETITION JUNK! or else more and more artist will just skip malaysia. remember beyonce? haaaaa.

This is absolutely disgraceful.
Now don't get me wrong, I wouldn't have gone anyway. I honestly can't stand her music, and the tickets were way too expensive for my liking. But just look at the precedent that this creates. I prefer not to get political about the matter, so I'll just say that certain groups will now be able to veto any concerts that are even slightly disagreeable. A real offence against freedom of speech and expression. More to the point, bands will be discouraged from performing here and organisers will stick to highly censored versions of INXS and My Chemical Romance. Few enough manage to get here as it is. And speaking of INXS, does anybody remember a certain opening band at INXS who proclaimed that "this next song is a big Up your's to Dr M"?
Don't remember seeing them get in trouble. So yes, how about some certain ultra-conservatives in this great and free nation learn to enjoy some bloody music.

Just my 2 and a half sen.

"The youth wing of the Federal Territory PAS led the cry for the cancellation, saying “rock and punk are not suitable for the young generation, especially during the Merdeka month.”" oh yeah, sure, but having a secret gang-bangs (before marriage) behind some bushes at their dormitory or a public place(doing it "ever so quietly") almost everyday of the year, even on a holy month is ok? yep, i see how you guys are "helping" the youth, way to go guys! i salute you! =/ go play in traffic!

i feel ashamed to be malaysian. now no one would ever wanna come to malaysia for concert anymore. hell to all those 'babi's!

not that i give a flying hoot. but avril's show is banned. yet a few years ago the cheeky girls performed ON merdeka day in front of some ministers, kat dataran merdeka.

this is contradiction to the fullest.

maybe if avril used microskirts and corsets, all will be ok.

kenchill said

Yeah she's too sexy!! If she is too sexy, I don't know what to say about Pussycat Dolls or all the girls in the clubs around KL. I think you can just stand at the traffic lights at Jln Bukit Bintang and find a girl sexier than Avril in less than a minute.

Apparently the reason of it being cancelled is not the way she dressed but the concert being not suitable in Merdeka month, there are many other Merdeka-related activities that youth should be engaged in. But how did My Little Airport get the permit to play on Merdeka eve? Isn't it inappropriate too? Shouldn't we all be freaking counting down somewhere in KL and watching the fireworks instead of attending a gig by some non-local artists?

msleepyhead said

Just a quick idea to protest the protest. Organize a get together with a pc projecting clips of Avril's live performance from youtube. That way it would snub them. Same goes for the Inul girl, it could be a two in one show. Avril and Inul youtube night or something. Then they'll protest the protest against the protest...

msleepyhead said

Sorry for the double post, but another idea to the quick idea. Instead of getting into trouble with the gathering, let's start an online Avril/Inul Fest. Everyone will be in front of their pcs, watching both artists on youtube during the time that Avril's concert is supposed to take place. If you don't want to be at home, you can be at any food/eatery with WiFi. It'll be like a flash mob kind of thing.

Any takers? JUNK how about organizing it?

conpuse said

xxx, my little airport is harmless twee pop. plus it's a small gig, not a huge ass concert that will steal the limelight of our so-called patriotic merdeka celebrations. pas prob don even know the gig exists!
