We reckon that After The Sky's new album Nothing But Colours will please fans of post and progressive hardcore rock with its wealth of creative riffs and ball-busting screams. Hailing from Singapore, singer Alfrey, guitarist/singer Bernard, guitarist/singer Wan, bassist Tweet and drummer Dzaf are an ambitious lot–not satisfied with their exposure in Singapore, they've also been playing everywhere around the region. The band took a break from touring to speak to Junk.
You guys recently played Japan. What was that like?
Alfrey: It was an educational and humbling experience. Playing abroad is always humbling for me.
Tweet: Well, i wouldn't know 'cause I fractured my wrist before the tour. But it was interesting to watch my own band play from the merchandise booth.
Bernard: Yeah, Tweet couldn't play for the tour because of some football mishap so we got Suhayl from Paris in the Making to stand in. So, #1 rule before a tour is "strictly no contact sport".
Your music is super energetic and you have some really hyper riffs. Is this from all the physical training you get from National Service (NS)?
B: (Laughs) I would like to think that our songwriting and musical influences don't have anything to do with the training we received in NS. I feel that the one thing from NS that we can apply to playing in a band is probably discipline.
Tell us about the song featured in June's Junk compilation 'When Loneliness Knows My Name'.
B: I think it's a song that tries to relate to the loneliness that anyone feels.
What have you guys got planned for the rest of the year?
Hezwan: Better and harder shows.
A: We have written and are still writing some new material. i hope it can be played before the end of the year.
B: Nothing's confirmed so far, but we're hoping to tour Australia in August and most probably Malaysia towards the end of the year.
Dzaf: Malaysia's always fun–a lot of friends, nice people, good food.... So yeah, hopefully more shows in Malaysia.
T: For all Liverpool fans, don't be too disappointed about this season. We did our best. You'll never walk alone.
