Satriani’s copyright infringement, which was filed last week in LA Federal courts, claims Coldplay’s ‘Viva La Vida’ incorporates “substantial original portions” of his 2004 six and a half-minute instrumental song ‘If I Could Fly’. The 52 year old guitar god is seeking a jury trial, damages and “any and all profits” garnered by the track. Coldplay received an outstanding number of seven Grammy nominations last week, second only to rapper Lil Wayne who fetched eight nominations.
The band however, denies plagiarism allegations. "With the greatest possible respect to Joe Satriani," they said in a statement, "If there are any similarities between our two pieces of music, they are entirely coincidental, and just as surprising to us as to him."
This isn’t the first allegations of plagiarism directed towards the band's hit song 'Viva La Vida'. Earlier this year, the band Creaky Boards alleged that Coldplay stole their melody to adapt it for 'Viva La Vida'. Coincidence? Judge it for yourself.
Coldplay's 'Viva La Vida' off their album Viva La Vida (Death And All His Friends).
Joe Satriani's 'If I Could Fly' off his album Is There Love In Space?
So what do you think? Is it just a coincidence or is the band guilty of plagiarism?
