Little Boots (real name Victoria Hesketh) is being touted as the new Kylie of this generation. That would be a fairly accurate comparison on first glance, since the 24 year old Brit is blonde, waifish and plies a brand of electro pop that you can't really get out of your head.
But there's a difference with this princess of tomorrow. For one, she writes her own songs (being an accomplished pianist). For another, her trademark instrument is not hot pants or a toned bum, but the Tenori-on—a flashy, Japanese beat-making instrument also utilised by Bjork.
All these factors, plus good ol' fashioned good taste, have made Little Boots the Sound of 2009, as decided by BBC. The annual survey of over 130 musicians, producers and music journalists from around the UK has proven to be pretty accurate over the years at spotting the next big thing, having identified Mika, 50 Cent, Keane and last year's Adele and Duffy.
So you need a new fit for 2009? Snuggle up to Little Boots. A debut album is due this year. Meanwhile, watch her, a piano and her Tenori-on construct the supremely delightful 'Meddle'.
